Making Youtube Part of your Social Media Strategy – How to Create and Use a Youtube Channel

As a business owner or marketer, you know the importance of a social media strategy. But do you include YouTube to build engagement and market your business?

With YouTube being one of the most popular search engines, your business’ presence is very important and your videos can be a very powerful tool. A YouTube channel for your business is a great place for things like free how-to’s, discount offers, video blogs, and customer engagement.

Creating a Youtube Channel

Step by step, here is how to create your Youtube channel:

1. Register an account

If you already have an account with Google, such as Gmail, Google Maps, etc., then you can use this login to access your YouTube account. If you need to create an account, there is a Create Account option in the top right corner. Simply follow instructions on registering your new account.

2. Verify your account

If you haven’t registered an account with Google, you may be unfamiliar with this step. Google often requires you to verify your account with a code. I recommend the texting option. A verification code will be sent right over and you can enter it and move on. And don’t worry about providing the ever powerful Google with your digits. They won’t call or even text you in the future. Unless of course you forget your password, then you will pat yourself on the back for having done this.

3. Upload your first video

If you don’t have a video ready to upload, just create a quick one to test your account. Use your webcam or have a coworker record an intro video to your new channel.

4. Share your channel

Once you have uploaded your first video, a YouTube channel is automatically created. Navigate to your Youtube channel by clicking on your username at the top of the screen. You’ll want to be sure your channel is named something relevant to your industry (ie., Heating & Cooling Tips). Use the Share option to share your videos with family and friends to ensure everything is working correctly.

Now that you have created a Youtube channel for your business, you are ready to use it to further market your business. Recent YouTube statistics show that Youtube receives 1 billion unique visitors each month. An even more shocking stat might be that 72 hours of video are uploaded every minute. So there definitely shouldn’t be any doubt of whether your customers and potential customers like videos.

Using Your Youtube Channel Effectively

Branding a Youtube channel for your business was the first step. Now you are ready to begin using it effectively. Here’s how:

1. Make video content relevant

Viewers are going to be searching for useful information and not a commercial. While it may be tempting to provide a sales pitch, resist this in order to not turn people away. Valuable information such as instructional guides and webinars will provide viewers with free information and keep them interested. Free information without a catch will also build loyalty and trust in viewers and make them more likely to pass the video along.

2. Make videos professional but simple

No one wants to watch a shaky video with poor sound quality. You don’t necessarily need expensive equipment, but you may consider using a tripod. Practice what you’re going to say a few times and outline or completely plan a script. This will keep you on track and give you confidence. Be sure to keep them short and sweet (2-4 minutes).

3. Optimize each video

There’s no point in making videos if they aren’t findable, right? Optimize your video by placing important keywords in the title (ie. “How to Change Your Air Filters). Then provide a description that is also very keyword rich. You can even place URL’s to your website throughout your description content. And finally, include all keywords and related keywords in the tags field.

4. Share your videos

Once your videos have been created, share them across your other social media profiles. Tweet your latest video or post them to your Facebook page to engage an audience. Add a call to action while sharing your videos with something simple like “visit our website!”.

When creating and sharing videos have fun and get creative! Don’t be afraid to make a joke here and there or start a contest. Like I said, everyone loves videos. A YouTube channel for your business can be an extremely powerful tool to build branding and engagement.
