In fact, over 200 million users are currently active on Twitter. With a 140 character maximum per tweet, the recipe to success is simple. Your business needs to stay in front of your loyal customers. So how is this done? By maintaining a satisfactory reputation and being where the conversation is.

If you do not have a Twitter account for your business it is simple to create a Twitter Business Profile.  Once you have a Twitter account it is time to get started.  The easiest (if not the most effective) way to start building your own following is by following people first. However, you want to keep in mind that it’s quality and not quantity. These are people that you want to have conversations with and will appreciate useful things that you post.  To increase your number of followers further; here are some steps recommended by Twitter:

  1. Share. Share images and behind the scenes stories about your business. Give an idea of some of the work you are doing.  Keep it fresh Twitter is about staying up to date.
  2. Listen. Regularly monitor the comments about your company, brand, and products.
  3. Ask. Ask questions of your followers to glean valuable insights and show that you are listening.
  4. Respond. Respond to compliments and feedback in real time
  5. Reward. Tweet updates about special offers, discounts and time-sensitive deals.
  6. Demonstrate wider leadership and know-how. Reference articles and links about the bigger picture as it relates to your business.
  7. Champion your stakeholders. Retweet and reply publicly to great tweets posted by your followers and customers.

Twitter is an information resource and you can use it to benefit your business.  Instead of searching the traditional @mentions and #hashtags, next time try searching a specific subject matter to find your customers. I recommend doing this through Twitter Search which will search tweets for your particular topic. You can also do a search by location with Nearby Tweets. For example, if you’re a massage therapist in Phoenix, you could do a search for those nearby who have tweeted about their recent back pain. Don’t be a crazy ex-girlfriend. Besides the obvious- promoting your business- keep in mind that you don’t want to be overwhelming. It’s not all sales, sales & more sales on social media. Your business is more likely to stick in a follower’s mind if you make your followers laugh or post about something trending such as the Super Bowl. Sticking to a schedule and spreading out your marketing can help avoid an overload situation.

Being a good Twitizen.

Everyday consumers are not naïve to the fact that they hold the power when it comes to social media. They can make or break your reputation among their followers with one tweet. It may not seem like it, but even a negative tweet towards your business can give you an advantage depending on how you handle it. The idea is that your twitter presence has given you the ability to handle it.
