SEO - Search Engine Optimization is sometimes referred to as SEM Search Engine Marketing. Generally SEO refers to the practice of developing website traffic from organic search results online. Generally SEM refers to Paid Search within search results online. So how does it work?
When a person searches online they are not searching the entire internet. They are really searching a database of information collected in advance by a particular Search Engine. The big three search engines (US) are Google, Bing and Yahoo. Google leads the way in market sahre with between 65% - 70% of all online searches. Bing and Yahoo control about 17% - 23% and everyone else shares the rest. When talking about SEO most information refers to Google.
Google sends out packets of code (often referred to as spiders, bots, crawlers etc.) that crawl the internet and index everything they find. Not just the websites - all the individual pages, blogs, posts, forums, forum messages, directories, drectory listings, images and videos; literally everything. This information is indexed (stored) in such a way to make it relatively simple to return the right search results quickly to the user. Google uses a very large algorithm to scan the index and return the results just like searching your customer database for an order except much more complicated. There are hundreds of factors that determine how a web presence is indexed.
The main 3 factors are broadly:
Social and online prominence
All results are returned to a Search Engine Results Page and they are not ordered alphabetically but by those 3 main criteria and 100's of others. SEO develops a web presence to position a page within the index to maximize exposure for the terms which are most valuable, relevant and/or local. Improving your position on SERPs is tied to SEO and how your online presence is presented to the index and algorithm. Because around 73% of second searches include a location stipulation your business location is critically important in SEO. Even more so when you consider that when people are searching on mobile devices and smart phones there location is accurately tracked and the search engines tailor specifically to the location.
This is where your Google My Business is important to SEO. Google provides your own mini location website which is free and part of their directory. All you need to start is a physical location for your business. There is a lot to do to ensure your business is prominent on the SERP. Your business name, address, phone number (NAP) information has to be consistent. They gather information from all over the web and create a data cluster for your business. That cluster is either weak or strong on a sliding scale and the stronger it is the more trust Google has in displaying your results over a competitor in the same business and area. Being highly trusted by Google, relevant, local and prominent can change your business results and that's where SEO comes in!
