All hosting is not created equal! Many business owners don't understand the importance of choosing their web host carefully. Unfortunately we meet discouraged business owners every week that have come to a disagreement with their web developer, only to find that their developer is holding their website hostage. Don't become a victim. Please review this important checklist before you select your web host.
Will you have your own login and password to the FTP and Control Panel (or database manager)? Inexperienced web developers lump all their customers into the same login and then are reluctant to share the login with anyone because it means they would be giving access to all their client's sites. Ensure that you will have your own login and password to your website information for both the files and the database.
Does the hosting include email? Some website hosts charge extra for providing an email at the domain you already purchased. While it may be normal to incur addtional charges for email storage, you should at least be able to set up a minimum number of email accounts at your domain.
Is there a contract? And if so, does it automatically renew? Don't get caught up in the hosting contract mess. The best thing is to ensure that you don't have a contract. The next best thing is to ensure that you can cancel your hosting contract without exorbanent fees. Remember that although you may love your hosting provider today, that doesn't mean you will next month.
Do they backup your website and information? If your host charges extra for backing up your information, beware! All website servers should be backed up on a regular basis as a matter of good common sense. Be sure to ask if there is a charge for restoring a backup and how long it will take to restore a backup.
What are their support hours? If you experience a problem on the weekend, is your website host going to be around to answer the phone. This is especially important if you have a retail business where most customers are browsing your website on the weekend.
